Runway Upgrade at Sumburgh Airport Runway Upgrade at Sumburgh AirportRunway 09/27 is the main runway at Sumburgh. It extends into the sea at both ends. It was recently lengthened, partly to allow the Saab 340 aircraft to take off with a full load in all weather conditions and partly to open up new opportunities.

During 2006, Ness Engineering, working as a sub-contractor with Balfour Beatty, installed replacement AGL field systems. The project included electrical works and fitting of seating rings.
