Ness Engineering has been serving Shetland and the Highlands for over 40 years—delivering trusted engineering, building, and plant hire solutions with skill, integrity, and staying power.
Ness Engineering was founded in 1980 to meet the growing demand for skilled engineering services across Shetland. What began as a small electrical and mechanical outfit has grown into one of the region’s most capable and multi-disciplined contractors—offering everything from plant hire and building works to facilities maintenance, plumbing, drainage, and waste handling. For over four decades, we’ve worked across the islands and into the Highlands, delivering dependable services in some of the most challenging conditions in the UK.
We’ve never aimed to be the biggest—we’ve focused on being the most reliable. The kind of company that turns up, gets on with it, and leaves things working better than we found them. That’s what’s built our reputation. Whether we’re installing a heating system, erecting a portal-framed building, or responding to a late-night maintenance callout, we bring the same approach every time: do the job properly, or don’t do it at all.
Our team is made up of qualified, experienced professionals across electrical, mechanical, civil, and building trades. We’re SELECT members, OFTEC registered, MCS accredited, and fully certified for confined space work, high-level access, and explosive atmosphere (COMPEX) installations. But beyond the paperwork, it’s the people that set us apart—engineers, operators, fabricators, and admin staff who understand the job, the environment, and what it means to deliver on a promise.
We’ve invested heavily in our equipment, fleet, and in-house stores—because up here, waiting on parts or plant can mean the difference between a finished job and a stalled site. From suction excavators and crane trucks to modular welfare units, skip lorries and road sweepers, we run our own fleet, maintained by our own team, so we can respond fast and with confidence. Our 24/7 on-call maintenance support for contracted clients is just one more way we make sure our clients can keep working, no matter what.
At Ness Engineering, we’re not just focused on the job in front of us—we’re invested in the long term. We support apprenticeships, local employment, and sustainable practices wherever possible. We’ve delivered infrastructure that powers, heats, houses, and connects Shetland communities—and we’re proud to keep playing our part in shaping what comes next.
If you’re looking for a company with the scale to handle complex projects—and the local knowledge to do it right the first time—get in touch. Ness Engineering is here for the long haul, and we’d be proud to work with you.
With an in-house fleet, fully stocked stores, and 24/7 maintenance cover for contracted clients, we don’t just supply services—we support projects from planning to completion. Whether you’re upgrading infrastructure, building new facilities, or just need dependable kit and skilled people, Ness Engineering is here to help make it happen—safely, efficiently, and with a personal touch.
